The advent of artificial intelligence has sent demand for data centers skyrocketing, along with industrial components to keep all the AI chips from overheating. "The key for chipmakers with AI ambitions is keeping data centers cool," Melius Research analyst Jake Levinson told CNBC. Levinson said cooling technologies manufacturers Carrier Global , Trane Technologies and Johnson Controls are all seeing higher demand for HVACs. Then there are the companies that create the infrastructure used to regulate temperature – from Parker-Hannafin's fluid connectors to Dover's industrial-style pumps used in liquid cooling. "We're having to challenge ourselves and how we support that capacity growth," CEO Scott Strazik told CNBC after the company posted first-quarter earnings last month.

All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

Companies Trane Technologies PLC FollowNov 1 (Reuters) - Trane Technologies reported third-quarter results that beat analysts' estimates and raised profit and revenue forecasts for the full year, underpinned by strong demand for heating and air-conditioning systems for commercial buildings. Global warming and rising levels of air pollution have led to an increase in demand for air conditioners and air purifiers. Trane Technologies increased its outlook for full-year adjusted profit to about $9.00 per share, from its previous forecast of $8.80 to $8.90 per share. The company, which operates brands such as Thermo King and Frigoblock, benefited from increased demand for environment-friendly heating, cooling and ventilation systems for commercial buildings and refrigeration systems used in trucks. On an adjusted basis, Trane earned $2.79 per share, compared with estimates of $2.66, according to LSEG data.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday told investors which companies he thinks have distinguished themselves during earnings season. "The problem, as I see it, is that we haven't really pointed out which companies have really distinguished themselves this earnings season, because we've been so focused on the market's wild day-to-day gyrations," he said. "That stops right now, right here. The stock jumped a little over 12% by Wednesday's close, bolstered by an earnings report that showed strong organic revenue growth. "When long rates soar, nobody cares about the earnings I just mentioned," Cramer said.

But as the stock market rally has sputtered, the $29 billion fund is showing promise once again. JEPI YTD mountain JEPI has underperformed the broader market this year but has proved stable in the recent market dip. The downside to the options strategy is that those trades, made through equity-linked notes, can be losers when markets rise. Reiner said that the fund's options income strategy involves selling call options, through equity-linked notes, that have a 30% chance of finishing in the money. JEPI is not the only active income strategy in the JPMorgan ETF lineup.

They're “the most potent greenhouse gases known to modern science,” as one research paper put it and they're growing fast. With the Environmental Protection Agency required to phase out one family of the chemicals 85% by 2036, the push is on to develop and spread cleaner alternatives. With more than 200 million gasoline cars in the U.S. alone, Groll said that amounts to approximately 100 million pounds of refrigerant leaking out into the atmosphere each year. The need to minimize refrigerant leaks has spurred a reuse and reclamation industry. ___Associated Press climate and environmental coverage receives support from several private foundations.

Morgan Stanley said high utility costs and growing awareness may drive a consumer shift to environmentally friendly products in housing — and there's a group of stocks that could benefit. That recovery should be driven by growing activity in the single-unit housing market, analyst Laura Sanchez said in a July 26 report. Morgan Stanley has five stocks with overweight ratings across the green housing landscape. Both Sunnova and Sunrun have monster rebounds expected after underperforming the market so far this year. The average analyst holds a buy rating, while the average price target implies the stock's 2023 rally could be coming to an end, according to Refinitiv.

Foreign direct investment is also picking up. That investment is on top of the reshoring boom that is already underway , as U.S. companies return operations back home, partly to ensure the safety of supply chains. More than 101,000 jobs were created by reshoring and foreign direct investment in the first quarter alone, up 11% year over year, according to the Reshoring Initiative . While Eaton is Snyder's top pick on the reshoring theme, he highlighted several other underappreciated names that stand to gain as well. Overall, auto reshoring announcements grew 30% in the second half of 2022 from the year prior, according to UBS.

Carrier Global 's long-term potential is currently overshadowed by a catalyst-free near term, Morgan Stanley warned. Analyst Joshua Pokrzywinski downgraded the HVAC stock to equal weight from overweight and cut his price target by $2. "But view the lack of near-term catalysts and relative resilience vs. other HVAC names as an opportunity to focus elsewhere for the next few quarters." Pokrzywinski said recent portfolio announcements put the company on track for "significant growth acceleration and rerating potential" in the next one to two years. Still, he said a pure-play HVAC business could rerate as high as Trane levels, which would mean an upside of 18% to Carrier's valuation.

The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. Supply-Chain Headaches Ease for Many Companies

Supply-chain snarls are fading from among the top challenges facing some U.S. companies as freight congestion eases, shipping costs fall and factories in Asia are freed from Covid-19 lockdowns. The rising costs and lengthy transit times pushed some companies to cut back on slower-selling products and raise prices. Today, freight congestion has cleared and ocean shipping costs have fallen close to prepandemic levels. Mr. Bergman said the decline was “partially offset by 40 basis points of favorable supply-chain impact driven by lower freight costs, which more than offset product cost headwinds during the quarter.”Some companies said they still have a way to go before supply-chain challenges are resolved. And Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Jim Farley told a virtual town hall on Feb. 9 that supply-chain problems were continuing to hamper the company’s progress.
A lawyer for Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary said in a statement that the company would seek a rehearing of the panel’s decision by the full 3rd Circuit court. Gordon’s strategy worked in bankruptcy court but set up J&J for failure when it faced the 3rd Circuit appeals panel. Gordon, at the bankruptcy conference, described the lawsuits as “completely unmanageable” and a dire threat to J&J that could go on for decades. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to hear arguments in coming months on a challenge to the 3M subsidiary’s bankruptcy. The litigation, they asserted, should be allowed to proceed against Georgia-Pacific because the parent company did not file for bankruptcy.
Jan 30 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Monday shot down Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ.N) attempt to offload tens of thousands of lawsuits over its talc products into bankruptcy court. The appeals court ruling revives those lawsuits. Monday's decision by the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia dismissed the bankruptcy filed by the J&J subsidiary in 2021. The appeals court decision could force companies considering the strategy to more carefully consider its risks, two legal experts said. The Texas two-step has garnered criticism from Democratic lawmakers in Washington, and inspired proposed legislation that would severely restrict the practice.

Citi's Scott Chronert expects a mild recession in the first half of this year and revealed three strategy calls that could help investors trade the downturn. Earnings Earnings will likely come in better than expected, according to Chronert in his outlook for this year, published in December. Strength in some sectors Chronert likes both industrials and energy looking ahead. In the December note, Citi listed a number of "preferred" U.S. energy stocks including APA and EOG Resources . Abercrombie & Fitch Co. is moving more merchandise through New York and New Jersey to avoid West Coast bottlenecks. It trailed its East Coast rival again in that measure during September and October, according to the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association and ports data. ”There are so many customers that got so screwed because they were entirely reliant on L.A. and Long Beach.”The logistical challenges of spreading imports along the East Coast and the Gulf Coast are massive. The shift in trade to the East Coast marks a return to where container ships originated. Then the U.S. began importing more goods from Europe, making an Atlantic Ocean crossing to various East Coast ports more critical.
A major rally could be ahead of some stocks that are forming "golden cross" patterns heading into the year-end. A golden cross chart pattern forms when the 50-day moving average climbs above the 200-day moving average. These names underperformed this year through the end of the third quarter, but they're outperforming the S & P 500 in the fourth quarter. However, it has since rebounded 28% in the fourth quarter, while the S & P 500 is up more than 10% in that time. The discount retailer is up 33% in the fourth quarter, when it was down 26% through the first three quarters this year.
Freight Operators’ Peak Shipping Season Is Crumbling

The peak shipping season is fizzling as overstocked retailers cancel overseas orders and freight companies scale back expectations for heavy freight volumes heading into the holidays. Many retailers pulled peak season orders in early this year to avoid a repeat of 2021 when supply-chain congestion caused delays and product shortages during the holidays. Container shipping rates that hit record highs last year have also pulled back sharply, although they still remain above 2019 levels. The peak shipping season cascades down into package transport, as United Parcel Service Inc., FedEx Corp. and others typically handle growing volumes as the calendar counts down to Christmas. Citi analysts say they expect a “weaker peak season and a large amount of uncertainty in terms of the magnitude of demand.”—Esther Fung and Liz Young contributed to this article.
